B.C. E-Licensing grows, adds Archaeological Permits

March 24, 2008

EDMONTON, AB – The Government of British Columbia’s POSSE E-Licensing initiative will be expanded to support a Web-enabled permit tracking system for the Archaeology Branch of the B.C. Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts.

Under the auspices of the province’s FrontCounter BC (web site: www.frontcounterbc.gov.bc.ca) initiative, Computronix has been awarded this latest integrated E-Government / E-Business project to further extend online enterprise POSSE architecture implemented in 2007 within the Ministry of Environment, one of the key ministry players within the province’s ground-breaking Integrated Land Management Bureau. The ILMB is emerging as a Canadian “best practice” model for cross-functional Provincial-level government management of natural resources.

“Computronix is very pleased to be partnering together with the ILMB E-Licensing office to deliver truly excellent solution for the Archaeology Branch, said Dave denOtter, BC Regional Manager.

The Permitting and Assessment Section of the Ministry’s Archaeology Branch administers permits under the Heritage Conservation Act.  The section represents archaeological resource interests on review committees established under the Environmental Assessment Act, and provides archaeological resource input to the development of the province’s land, resources, and water use.

With human evidence dating back over 12,000 years, British Columbia has one of the most diverse and complex archaeological histories in Canada.

B.C.’s archaeological site inventory includes records for about 30,000 sites. This information is accessed by resource managers, land managing agencies, land conveyors, First Nations, and private property owners.
