What is Business Process Management?

"Business Process Management or BPM, is the practice of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of any organization by automating the organization's business processes.” BPM Tutorial

BPM involves automating and improving business processes, which may or may not involve human interaction management, in order to complete work in series or parallel. Business process management software is typically used to manage and monitor these business process activities for reporting, optimization and improvement.

Related Activities – Business Process Reengineering

BPM is also related to Business Process Reengineering (BPR) and Enterprise Content Management (ECM). ECM involves managing the capture, storage, use, security, control, retrieval, and distribution of information and documents within an organization.

BPR is defined by Michael Hammer and James Champy in Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution (1993), as “the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical contemporary measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed."
